Ballad of the Glen Canyon Dam
(Evan Eleven/ Edward Abbey)
Well, the year it is 1966 good friends and the date is September 22
the setting of my story is Glen Canyon, Arizona and the rocks are red,
the sky is blue
the glory of this land with it's canyon walls so grand and it's
rushing, roaring river running thru
can scarcely be described, tho photographs have tried to save the
beauty seen by just a few
The first men in this land were the Anasazi Indians- built their
pueblos high upon the rocky walls
and then the greedy Spaniards, in search of seven cities, were the next
to view the canyon's waterfalls
in 1869 major Powell made the climb over the rapids in his wooden boats
so small
but on this fateful day, a flood will wash away all the secrets that
were seen by them all
So the events of my story now describe the ceremony of the opening of
the Glen Canyon Dam
for this artificial monster of steel and rock and concrete seeks to
drown many hundred miles of land
this dam can take away in one single day a million years of Mother
Nature's plan
and when the gates are shut, the canyon that she cut will covered with
a lake made by man
And so upon this day, assembled in the audience are the governors of
the four corner states
and the wife of the president, Lady Bird Johnson will close up the
dam's great gates
but what will happen next, nobody suspects and the history books will
all record this date
for today the works of man are powerless to stand up against the
twisting trickery of fate
So the lady makes her speech and she turns to pull the lever and she's
followed by the flash bulbs and cheers
but as the crowd is watching, a great roaring rumble of deafening
destruction fills their ears
and in that commotion, the loveliest explosion ever seen by man wipes
clear
the threat of that huge dam that loomed upon the land and cowed the
canyon in a cloud of fear
For some unknown hero with a rucksack full of dynamite- we will forever
wonder at his name-
sabotaged the dam with angelic ingenuity and destroyed it in a cloud of
smoke and flame
and from the rubble of the walls, the Floyd E. Dominy Falls now flow
with their own legend and fame
but as i think back now, i have to wonder how it could have happened-
maybe it was all a dream
So the year it is 1966 good friends and the date is September 22
the setting of my story is Glen Canyon, Arizona and the rocks are red,
the sky is blue
the glory of this land with it's canyon walls so grand and it's
rushing, roaring river running thru
can scarcely be described, tho photographs have tried to save the
