The Fox
(traditional/ Evan Eleven)
O the fox went out on a chilly night
and he prayed for the moon to give him light
for he'd many a mile to go that night before he reached the town O, town O, town O
he'd many a mile to got that night before he reached the town
So the fox he ran across a bridge
and over a hill and under a hedge
and there he saw at the forest's edge the houses of the town O, town O, town O
there he saw at the forest's edge the houses of the town
And the fox he came to a great big bin
and the ducks and the geese were put therein
he said, "a couple o' you will grease my chin before i leave this town O, town O, town O"
a couple o' you will grease my chin before i leave this town
So he grabbed the grey goose by the neck
and he swung a duck across his back
and he didn't mind the quack, quack, quack or the legs all danglin' down O, down O, down O
he didn't mind the quack, quack, quack or the legs all danglin' down
But old mother Pitter Patter jumped out of bed
and out of the window she popped her head
she cried, "John, John the grey goose is gone and the fox is on the town O, town O, town O"
"John, John the grey goose is gone and the fox is on the town"
So John, he ran to the top of the hill
and he blew his horn both loud and shrill
and the fox he said, "I better flee with my kill or soon they'll hunt me down O, down O, down O
the fox he said, "I better flee with my kill or soon they'll hunt me down"
So the fox he ran under a hedge
and over a hill and across a bridge
and there he saw by the rocky ridge his home all safe and sound O, sound O, sound O
there he saw by the rocky ridge his home all safe and sound
And the fox he came to his cozy den
and there were the little ones- eight, nine, ten
and they said, "daddy, better go back again 'cos it must be a mighty fine town O, town O, town O"
they said, "daddy, better go back again 'cos it must be a mighty fine town"
So the fox and his wife, without any strife
they cut up the goose with a fork and a knife
and they never had such a supper in their life and the little ones chewed on the bones O, bones O, bones O
they never had such a supper in their life and the little ones chewed on the bones O
